Sr. Linux System Engineer

Salary Range: $100,000 to $125,000


Position Summary:

As a Linux Systems Engineer on the infrastructure team, you will be working on and supporting a Linux environment. Primary responsibilities include defining the next evolution of a set of small scale networks used for vendor collaboration and supporting the user base of the primary, medium scale, network.


  • Automating and improving existing processes

  • Improving and refining system and service monitoring of servers

  • Hands-on server/hardware debugging and problem remediation

  • Supporting a virtualized environment

  • Implementing solutions to problems of diverse scope in specific areas, including data analysis to identify root cause and contributing factors

  • Improving and refining server OS deployments and provisioning processes

  • Documentation, service management, service improvement, service delivery

  • Reviewing, improving, and generating documentation for multiple functional areas

  • Provisioning Linux servers and support of compute Grid.

  • Assignment of work through ticket system with responsibility to remediate issue


  • Associate’s Degree Required (Bachelor’s Degree preferred)

  • 7+ years of experience

  • Excellent knowledge of building, configuring, and administering Linux computer systems

  • Experience programming in Bash, Python, CGI, PHP, Perl, or similar scripting languages

  • Hands-on experience with CFEngine, Cobbler, PXE, Kickstart, Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Salt, or similar configuration and automation tools and practices

  • Advanced knowledge of networking concepts and practices

  • Expert skills with most Linux operating system commands and utilities

  • Virtualization environments and tools such as VMWare, vCenter, vCenter Orchestrator

  • Solid understanding of automated deployments

  • Strong understanding of networking technologies (routing, switching, firewalls, iptables, etc.)

  • Experience with source code management tools such as git

  • Hands-on experience with performance analysis tools, benchmarks and applications

  • Proficient software skills for light programming and scripting, operating system administration, and hardware administration.

  • Expertise with Linux operating systems including operations in a large-scale production environment.

  • Experience with system and application monitoring, software distribution, patching and maintenance in a Linux environment

  • Significant experience with common internet protocols and services including TCP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, HTTP, SSH, TFTP, NIS, LDAP & AD

  • Robust troubleshooting and analytical skills

  • Excellent communication, documentation and presentation skills for technical and business audiences
